Role Overview: Staff Engineer, Revenue & Finance Automation
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Engineer to play a pivotal role in architecting and designing our financial data management systems from the ground up. This position demands technical leadership, strategic vision, and the ability to mentor and grow engineering talent. You will be instrumental in shaping the technical direction across a diverse range of projects and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Project Leadership: Scope, architect, and lead complex technical projects that form the foundational pillars of our Financial Data Management Infrastructure.
- Architectural Decision-Making: Critically evaluate and make sound decisions regarding technology and architecture choices, ensuring alignment with best practices and business needs.
- Hands-on Contribution: Directly contribute to core interface design and write high-quality code, serving as a benchmark for engineering excellence at Stripe.
- Stakeholder Management: Arbitrate critical technical decisions, considering software best practices, system realities, and stakeholder requirements.
- Strategic Advising: Provide expert technical guidance to Stripe’s leadership on the future of financial data management, including emerging technologies.
- Mentorship: Teach, mentor, and inspire the next generation of technical leaders within Stripe, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
Who You Are:
- Extensive Experience: Possess 12+ years of experience in system architecture and designing sophisticated distributed systems that manage substantial data volumes.
- Senior Engineering Acumen: Have a proven track record as a Staff, Principal, or Distinguished Engineer.
- Big Data & Streaming Expertise: Deep practical experience with big data and streaming technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Presto, Iceberg, and Airflow.
- Microservices Development: Demonstrable experience in building products based on modern microservices architecture.
- Technical Leadership: Proven ability to serve as a technical lead for engineering teams and exhibit broad technical leadership across projects.
- Roadmap Ownership: Experience owning and defining the technical roadmap for a specific business area.
- Communication & Influence: Excellent listening skills, ability to internalize diverse ideas, and capacity to set a compelling technical vision.
- Collaboration & Trust: Ability to work effectively cross-functionally, earning the trust of colleagues at all levels and across different teams.
- Inspirational Mentor: Recognized as a source of inspiration and learning for engineers, including senior team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Domain expertise in accounting or financial management is highly desirable but not mandatory.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Strong technical background, including 12+ years of experience with system architecture and designing distributed systems handling large amounts of data
- Been a Staff, Principal, or Distinguished Engineer
- Deep experience building custom solutions using big data and streaming technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Presto, Iceberg, and Airflow
- Hands on experience in building modern microservices architecture-based products
- Served as the technical lead for a team of engineers and can demonstrate broad technical leadership
- Owned the technical roadmap for a business area
- Listen well and internalize the best ideas from all over the organization while also setting a vision that others are excited to get behind
- Work well cross-functionally and your co-workers at all levels and across all teams trust you
- Often cited as the inspiration for engineers that join your teams. Even senior engineers feel that they’re able to learn from you
- Domain expertise in accounting or financial management is a plus but not a requirement
