The Community You Will Join: Cloud Infrastructure Team
The Cloud Infrastructure team at Airbnb is the backbone of the company’s operations. This team is responsible for designing, delivering, and maintaining the foundational platforms and cloud environment that power all Airbnb services. Their mission is to provide a reliable, secure, efficient, and user-friendly platform, enabling seamless operation of services in the cloud. Airbnb actively participates in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) end-user community and collaborates with open-source projects (like Kubernetes and Istio) and peer companies to address large-scale cloud-native engineering challenges. The Difference You Will Make
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Cloud Infrastructure team, you will be instrumental in shaping the infrastructure platform that supports every team across Airbnb. Your primary responsibilities will include the development and operation of critical components such as:
- Developer APIs and Command-Line Interfaces (CLIs).
- Kubernetes infrastructure management and optimization.
- Autoscaling and capacity management tools.
- Cloud infrastructure automation solutions.

A Typical Day Might Involve
- Innovating and building state-of-the-art cloud-native infrastructure leveraging public cloud technologies.
- Delivering secure, efficient, mature, and highly available frameworks and platforms that simplify infrastructure complexity for other teams.
- Optimizing and enhancing existing systems and services to improve performance and operational efficiency.
- Implementing industry best practices for distributed systems to enhance system availability.
- Collaborating with a talented and diverse team of infrastructure engineers to establish a solid technological foundation for Airbnb’s future growth.
Your Expertise
- Kubernetes Mastery: Deep, hands-on operational experience with Kubernetes at scale is essential. You should be able to discuss its architecture, operational challenges, and best practices in detail.
- Experience Level: A minimum of 10 years of industry experience with a BS/Masters degree, or 2+ years with a PhD, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
- Large-Scale Project Experience: Proven track record in developing and operating large-scale technical projects in collaboration with experienced engineers.
- Public Cloud Proficiency: Expertise with major public cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings (e.g., EC2, GCE, Azure VM).
- Containerization Technologies: Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) technologies.
- Full-Cycle Development: A full-stack mentality with strong ownership, experienced in building and operating high-scale, distributed systems throughout the entire software development lifecycle.
- Communication Skills: Excellent ability to communicate effectively within and across engineering teams.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, coupled with solid production debugging skills.
- Passion for Quality: A genuine enthusiasm for efficiency, availability, reliability, and overall system quality.
Location and Work Arrangement
This position is designated as US – Remote Eligible. While remote, the role may require occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsite events, as determined with your manager. Candidates must reside in a state where Airbnb Payments, Inc. (a subsidiary of Airbnb, Inc.) is a registered entity.
