Key Responsibilities
- Deliver significant technical projects from problem framing through rollout (e.g., trace aggregation APIs, autoscaling cells, query engine improvements).
- Own major components of Tempo including ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
- Build structured, discoverable APIs for humans, AI-driven assistants, and external integrators.
- Contribute to operational excellence, hitting concrete SLOs and driving toward Zero Ops through automation.
- Collaborate closely with Product and sibling teams (App Observability, Asserts, Drilldown, and Grafana Assistant).
- Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews and design feedback.
- Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, and open-source community engagement.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Technical ownership with a track record of delivering complex, multi-month projects.
- Solid hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
- Strong software craftsmanship with a focus on clean, robust, and performant code.
- Strong proficiency in Go, or equivalent experience in other systems languages (Rust, C, C++).
- Operational mindset with experience owning production services and managing SLOs.
- Strong collaboration skills and clear written communication in a remote, asynchronous environment.
