Systems Engineer, Tech Foundations (Jira cloud)
Job Overview
Life at Airbnb is about connecting people and creating a sense of belonging, whether you’re a host, a guest, or part of the Airbnb team. Since its inception in 2007, Airbnb has grown exponentially, facilitating billions of guest arrivals and empowering millions of hosts worldwide. The company culture is built on the belief that diverse ideas drive innovation and engagement, leading to the development of exceptional products and services.
The world of work is rapidly evolving, and Airbnb is at the forefront of this transformation. They have demonstrated remarkable agility, navigating challenges like the pandemic, rebuilding the company, achieving a successful IPO, and shipping significant product upgrades, all while operating remotely. This experience has reshaped their understanding of what’s possible, particularly with the advent of AI. Airbnb is actively integrating AI into its operations, using it to amplify the impact of every employee, system, and decision. They are committed to being a leader in this new era, where AI compresses timelines, breaks down traditional silos, enhances quality, and enables smaller, focused teams to achieve ambitious goals.
The Systems Engineer, Tech Foundations (Jira cloud) role is central to this vision. This is a hands-on position for a builder who thrives on speed, quality, and leveraging AI as a multiplier. You will be instrumental in configuring, maintaining, and continuously improving Airbnb’s Atlassian platforms, with a specific focus on the end-to-end delivery of projects within the Jira Data Center deprecation and transition to Jira Cloud initiative. You will work autonomously on projects that may span multiple components and require shaping undefined details in collaboration with senior engineers and your manager. A key aspect of your role will be identifying and implementing AI and automation solutions to reduce toil and enhance reliability for the teams you support. This position demands solid platform knowledge, sound technical judgment, and a strong curiosity to grow into senior-level responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities and Daily Tasks:
- Administer Jira Cloud Software (JSW) and Jira Cloud Service Management (JSM), taking ownership of specific environment areas to boost reliability and quality, adhering to established configuration standards and governance.
- Design and implement comprehensive Jira configurations, including custom workflows, issue type hierarchies, permission schemes, notification schemes, screens, and field configurations, following Atlassian best practices and seeking senior review for designs.
- Deliver end-to-end migration workstreams within the Jira Data Center to Cloud program, such as migrating project sets or configuration domains, and coordinating cutover readiness with stakeholders.
- Configure Jira Service Management projects, including SLAs, custom queues, JSM Forms, approval workflows, and security schemes, to effectively support internal service delivery teams.
- Build and maintain dashboards and reporting using native Jira Cloud tooling, as Airbnb opts against Atlassian Marketplace products for security, privacy, and legal reasons.
- Support and maintain Airbnb’s custom Forge applications in collaboration with supporting systems engineering teams.
- Manage Atlassian access, user lifecycle, and license hygiene, and contribute to enhancing the overall security posture.
- Partner with business stakeholders in requirements-gathering sessions, translating needs into actionable configuration and automation solutions, and proactively identifying potential issues or risks.
- Configure Atlassian Rovo AI agents and automation rules, evaluating trade-offs between delivery speed and long-term sustainability, and applying AI responsibly and contextually.
- Write and maintain automation rules using Jira’s native Automation engine and JavaScript, utilizing the Jira REST API for integrations, data imports, and custom reporting.
- Support testing cycles for platform changes and migrations, including writing and running test scripts, tracking defects, and ensuring a robust rollback plan is in place before deployment.
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, retrospectives, and standups for platform-focused workstreams.
- Maintain up-to-date system configurations, runbooks, and knowledge base articles to ensure operational continuity and facilitate self-service.
- Participate in the on-call rotation, respond promptly to Atlassian platform incidents, and contribute to post-incident reviews.
- Identify and reduce technical debt over time, provide constructive feedback in design and configuration reviews, and mentor teammates through specific examples and timely feedback.
- Contribute to the hiring and onboarding process by delivering clear and timely feedback on candidates.
