This is a full-time, laboratory-based role working as an employee of Parexel FSP on a long-term assignment onsite at one of our premier biopharmaceutical clients located in South San Francisco, CA. The successful candidate will play a critical role in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting open-access analytical instruments, ensuring high uptime and reliable data generation for discovery and development teams.
This position offers a competitive base salary range of $75,000 to $100,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) matching, sick time, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO). Key aspects of the role include:
- Operating and maintaining open-access LC-MS and HPLC systems to support high-throughput analysis.
- Performing routine upkeep, daily performance checks, and system calibrations.
- Troubleshooting and repairing minor instrument issues such as leaks, clogs, and pressure anomalies.
- Coordinating cryogen orders and performing weekly liquid nitrogen fills for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instruments.
- Assisting research scientists with sample preparation, data acquisition, and purity analysis of investigational compounds.
- Maintaining meticulous documentation, instrument performance logs, and service records.

Key Responsibilities
- Checks instrument performance daily and performs routine upkeep of open access LC-MS instruments.
- Responds to end-user repair calls for LC-MS instrumentation and troubleshoots/repairs simple issues such as leaks or clogs.
- Submits and coordinates repair tickets with manufacturers for complex instrument issues.
- Coordinates cryogen orders and performs weekly liquid nitrogen fills for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instruments.
- Performs daily sample clean-up on the open-access NMR systems.
- Cleans electrospray ionization (ESI) process sources and runs calibration standards monthly.
- Assists with preparation of samples and set up of data acquisition for analysis by liquid chromatography (LC), LC-MS, and Circular Dichroism (CD) Spectroscopy.
- Documents LC-MS performance, system uptime, and maintenance history.
- Assists with purity analysis of investigational compounds by LC.
- Maintains accurate documentation, laboratory notebooks, and electronic records.
Requirements & Qualifications
- For Principal Scientist I: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field with 3-5 years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 1-2 years of experience.
- For Principal Scientist II: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field with 7+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience, or a PhD with 1+ year of experience.
- Hands-on experience and strong technical knowledge in High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and LC-MS is required.
- Ability to work onsite full-time in South San Francisco, CA.
- Must have permanent authorization to work in the US without sponsorship.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in HPLC and LC-MS operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of sample preparation techniques and mobile phase preparation.
- Ability to interpret mass spectral data and perform structural assignments of unknown compounds.
- Familiarity with NMR upkeep, liquid nitrogen handling, and CD Spectroscopy is highly desired.
- Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.
- Strong written and oral communication capabilities for effective collaboration in a fast-paced environment.
