Comprehensive Syllabus Breakdown

To excel in the SSC Stenographer exam, candidates must have a thorough understanding of the three core sections of the Computer-Based Test (CBT). The syllabus is designed to test both cognitive abilities and language proficiency.

• General Intelligence & Reasoning: This section includes both verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions. Key topics to focus on are analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, and arithmetical number series. Daily practice of mock tests is essential to improve speed and accuracy.
• General Awareness: Questions in this section are designed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around them and its application to society. It includes questions on Current Events, India and its neighboring countries, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity including Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research. Keeping up with daily news and reading standard yearbooks is highly recommended.
• English Language & Comprehension: This is the most crucial section, carrying 50% of the total marks. Candidates are tested on their understanding of the English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and correct usage. Focus heavily on reading comprehension, active/passive voice, direct/indirect speech, cloze tests, and spot-the-error exercises.

Stenography Skill Test Preparation

The Skill Test is the ultimate deciding factor for final selection. Even with a high score in the CBT, failing the skill test will lead to disqualification. Therefore, stenography practice must run parallel to written exam preparation.

• Speed Building: For Grade C, aim for a consistent shorthand writing speed of 110-120 wpm to comfortably clear the 100 wpm exam threshold. For Grade D, aim for 90-100 wpm to clear the 80 wpm requirement.
• Accuracy and Transcription: Writing shorthand is only half the battle; transcribing it accurately on the computer within the stipulated time is critical. Practice transcribing daily to minimize spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Keep errors strictly below the 5% limit for Grade C (UR) and 7% for Grade D (UR).
• Familiarity with Diverse Dictations: Practice dictations from various sources, including editorial columns, parliamentary debates (KC Publications), and general essays, to get used to different accents, vocabularies, and speeds.
