About the Software Engineer, Cloud Networking Role

Airbnb is seeking a Software Engineer for the Cloud Networking team within the Cloud Infrastructure organization. This team owns and operates the entire production network infrastructure supporting over 5 million hosts and billions of guest arrivals worldwide. The infrastructure powers essential connections across all users, internal services, traffic proxies, load balancers, service meshes, and cross-region gateways.

Key Impact & Contributions

In this role, you will work alongside exceptional engineers on modern cloud native network architecture ranging from Layer 3 to Layer 7. You will contribute directly to major infrastructure initiatives such as global load balancing, disaster recovery frameworks, next-generation service mesh, and edge security systems designed to withstand internet-scale traffic.

  • Design and maintain high-performance multi-region cloud networks across public cloud vendors like AWS and GCP.
  • Work closely with CNCF open source communities, including Kubernetes and Istio, to implement advanced service mesh functionality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, infrastructure, and security teams to construct robust security systems guarding Airbnb’s global endpoints.
  • Build software tools to streamline network monitoring, automated mitigation, and continuous delivery across production clusters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with open source communities (such as Istio) to construct next-generation service mesh solutions for back-end services.
  • Build cross-region gateways and load balancers servicing global Airbnb user traffic.
  • Partner with external stakeholders and internal security teams to deliver reliable edge security defenses.
  • Design multi-region public cloud network architecture and develop operational tools for production management.
  • Optimize global network performance, reliability, and bandwidth efficiency for microservices.
  • Participate in full software life cycle management and on-call rotations for critical production infrastructure.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years of software development experience in fast-paced, high-growth technology environments.
  • Solid expertise in public cloud networking offerings including AWS VPC, GCP, Azure, Security Groups, and PrivateLink.
  • Demonstrated experience operating large-scale networking systems, edge proxies, DNS, CDN, or network gateways.
  • Practical experience with Istio and Envoy proxy is highly desirable.
  • Full-cycle development capabilities with strong ownership across distributed systems architecture.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong team collaboration abilities.
  • Proven problem-solving aptitude and experience serving on-call for production services.
