Senior Software Engineer – Session Replay

The Session Replay squad is developing a new Grafana Cloud product designed to help customers understand user experiences when issues arise. This product connects frontend signals (errors, performance) to concrete session-level evidence, enabling faster and more confident investigation of production issues. The team operates at the intersection of frontend observability, large-scale backend data processing and storage, debugging workflows, privacy, and performance optimization.

As the Session Replay product is still in its early stages, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape its development and integration within Grafana Cloud. A key focus for the next phase is evolving the backend architecture, including a migration towards a columnar/analytical solution for high-volume session data storage and querying.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technical Leadership: Own the end-to-end technical direction for the Session Replay product, encompassing frontend, backend, and data systems.
• Backend Architecture Evolution: Drive the design and implementation of systems around columnar/analytical data storage for large-scale session data, defining data models, ingestion pipelines, and query patterns.
• Workflow Design: Lead the design of investigation workflows, integrating replay data with logs, metrics, traces, and other telemetry across Grafana Cloud.
• Architectural Decisions: Make high-leverage architectural decisions that impact multiple teams and products.
• Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner with teams across Grafana (e.g., Frontend Observability, Synthetic Monitoring, Core Grafana) to build cohesive cross-product experiences.
• Customer Engagement: Engage directly with customers, gather structured feedback, and assist them in adopting Session Replay.
• Engineering Excellence: Improve engineering standards, patterns, and operational practices within the team.
• Mentorship: Mentor engineers and contribute to growing technical leadership within the team.

Technical Environment:

• Backend: Golang (services and APIs)
• Data Storage: Columnar/Analytical data storage, Object storage (S3, GCS, Azure Blob Storage), MySQL
• Frontend: TypeScript / React (user-facing workflows)
• Ecosystem: Grafana ecosystem (Mimir, Loki, Tempo, etc.)

• Experience working on performance-sensitive systems (large datasets, real-time queries, session data).

Compensation and Rewards:

In Canada, the base compensation range for this role is CAD 164,490 – CAD 197,389. Actual compensation will vary based on level, experience, and skillset. All roles include Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), granting team members ownership in Grafana Labs’ success.

Compensation ranges are country-specific. Recruiters will discuss specific market pay ranges and benefits at the beginning of the process for candidates applying from different locations.
