About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Scientist II – Formulation Scientist to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis. This role is an integral part of the Parexel FSP Functional Service Provider team, working on a long-term assignment onsite at one of our esteemed clients located in Rahway, New Jersey. Job Summary
The Formulation Scientist – Lab Support for Formulation Development role is responsible for executing formulation development efforts for investigational pharmaceutical products. The scope of work includes developing both solid dosage forms and liquid solutions and suspensions. While prior knowledge of specific processes and equipment in pharmaceutical formulation is desirable, it is not a mandatory requirement, as the candidate will receive thorough training. A strong aptitude for learning and a background in a laboratory setting are highly valued.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute formulation development activities for investigational pharmaceutical products, focusing on solid dosage forms, liquid solutions, and suspensions.
- Perform laboratory and pilot-scale powder handling and operate processing equipment such as blenders, granulators, encapsulators, or tablet compressors.
- Conduct characterization of formulations, including physical and chemical analysis.
- Prepare and handle potent compound formulations and processes with strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Manage material logistics, including shipping, handling, forecasting, restocking, and dispensing.
- Document and report experimental results clearly and accurately to senior scientific staff.
- Collaborate effectively with other technical groups and a scientific supervisor.
- Support laboratory investigations to resolve unexpected results.
- Fulfill requests for research and administrative activities, maintaining an organized calendar of tasks.
- Perform cell assays using prepared formulations.
Qualifications
- Education: BS/MS in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience: Scientist 2 level requires a BS with 1-2 years of relevant experience, or an MS with no prior experience.
- Required Skills: Strong laboratory and analytical skills, excellent documentation and reporting capabilities, strong verbal and written communication skills, and comfort working in a laboratory environment with a strong emphasis on safety.
- Desired Skills: Research or industrial experience with techniques such as handling chemicals/powders in a wet lab setting, oral dosage form tablet compression, powder milling, roller compaction, wet granulation, film coating, hot melt extrusion, capsule filling, or liquid blending/formulation. Prior experience in a pharmaceutical product development laboratory is beneficial. Experience with cell culture is also desired. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently to drive tasks to completion are advantageous.

- Desired: Experience with USP disintegration testing, tablet tensile strength testing, or USP friability testing.
