Stripe is a leading financial infrastructure platform empowering businesses of all sizes to accept payments, grow revenue, and build new business models. Our work is technically sophisticated, economically consequential, and vital to online commerce. We are seeking a senior editorial leader to join our Narrative & Editorial team, responsible for bringing original stories and insights from Stripe to a broader audience through strategic media partnerships and brand marketing channels.
About Stripe and the Team
Stripe’s mission is to increase the GDP of the internet. Millions of companies globally rely on our platform. The Narrative & Editorial team comprises Content Marketing, Brand Marketing, Portfolio Product Marketing, Copywriting, Copy Editing, and Customer Marketing. We craft coherent and distinctive stories about the businesses, technologies, and economic forces shaping the internet.
What You Will Do
As an Editorial Director, you will be a senior individual contributor focused on leading the editorial and creative direction for Stripe’s most significant external media partnerships. This includes advertising content, research-led collaborations, and original editorial programs developed with renowned publishers and creators. Your work will ensure that content feels native to its audience and editorial environment, avoiding generic brand messaging. You will transform Stripe’s data analyses, economic insights, and customer stories into content that is clear, surprising, useful, and memorable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the editorial and creative direction for major external media partnerships, including advertising content, research collaborations, and original editorial programs.
- Develop content that is native to the audience and editorial environment, distinguishing it from generic brand messaging.
- Translate Stripe’s original data, economic insights, and customer stories into clear, surprising, useful, and memorable content pieces.
- Shape the full editorial process for partnership work: refining briefs, identifying strong ideas, directing creative development, and providing decisive feedback.
- Direct and manage agencies, external creators, and editorial partners, working within existing structures and agreements.
- Write, edit, and materially improve high-stakes content across various formats: blog posts, newsletter segments, podcast scripts, ad copy, social posts, etc.
- Generate original concepts for creative programs, editorial franchises, and nontraditional formats to enhance Stripe’s contribution to conversations about the internet economy.
- Serve as a trusted thought partner to internal teams, helping them clarify ideas, find the strongest expression of their work, and make better creative decisions.
- Partner with colleagues in Brand Marketing, Brand Design, Content Marketing, Portfolio PMM, Copywriting, and Customer Marketing to ensure coherent and distinctive storytelling.
- Define and uphold a clear quality bar for editorial and partnership work, making well-reasoned calls on readiness and improvement needs.
Who You Are
We seek individuals with exceptional editorial judgment and a demonstrated ability to make complex ideas compelling. Experience may be gained in newsrooms, independent publications, creative studios, agencies, research institutions, or technology companies. You should have:
- 8+ years of relevant experience in editorial, writing, creative development, journalism, publishing, media, brand strategy, or a closely related field.
- An exceptional portfolio of published or public-facing work showcasing strong writing, editing, original thinking, and audience engagement.
- A deep understanding of online discourse, including newsletters, social platforms, and niche communities discussing technology, economics, science, business, and culture.
- Excellent editing skills with the ability to diagnose issues, identify key arguments, and provide feedback that significantly improves work.
- Experience developing original editorial work, sponsored media, advertising, or creative partnerships.
- The ability to distinguish between on-message content and genuinely interesting, useful, or discussable work.
- Proficiency in translating complex subjects (technology, business, economics, science, policy) into accessible yet insightful content.
- Strong creative instincts and a sophisticated design sensibility, understanding the interplay of language, ideas, visuals, format, and distribution.
- Deep curiosity about the technology industry and its broader cultural and economic context.
- Comfort influencing senior stakeholders, external partners, writers, designers, marketers, and agencies without formal authority.
- The ability to move fluidly between strategy and execution, from idea development to final quality calls.
- High standards, sound judgment, and pragmatism to deliver excellent work within real constraints.
